
Credit bureaus collect and collate personal information, financial data, and alternative data on individuals. The sources of this data include creditors, lenders, utilities, debt collection agencies and public records. The data is aggregated, and the resulting individual credit report is made available on request to customers of the credit bureaus for credit risk assessment, credit scoring, or for other purposes such as employment consideration or leasing an apartment.
As a consumer, you are eligible to receive one (1) free credit report from the credit bureaus each year. When you receive your credit report, review it carefully for fraudulent or inaccurate activity. If there is something on the credit report that you dispute, contact the credit bureau immediately.
In addition, if you are a victim of identity theft, you can receive a free copy of your credit report. You should request one report from each credit bureau, as the information can differ. When the issue has been resolved, the credit bureaus will send you another copy of your credit report. Review the report carefully to ensure your file has been corrected.
